DLS Announces Scholarship Winners

Two scholarships will be awarded by the DLS Scholarship Fund Committee this fall. Scholarships include a $3,000 award to a Masters in Library Science (MLS) degree candidate and a $750 award to a Library Technical Assistant (LTA) candidate.

Scholarship recipients will be honored on September 18, 2009 at the annual Scholarship Dinner to be held at The Carlisle, 435 E. Butterfield Rd. in Lombard.

The winners are:

  • Amanda Williams, Packer Engineering Knowledge Service Center, Naperville ($3,000 scholarship).

Amanda Williams is working toward a Masters in Library Science at Dominican University. She finds working at the Knowledge Service Center to be rewarding and enjoys assisting engineers with research and locating obscure materials. Williams is highly motivated to help library patrons and work collaboratively. She has a quest for learning and embraces technology and the changes that that are happening in the library world as she advances her career in librarianship.

In a letter of recommendation, Bill Crowley, Ph. D., professor at Dominican University, stressed that, "Amanda's clear intelligence, demonstrated work ethic, fine people and communication skills, and remarkable commitment to the profession mark her as an up-and-coming library leader."

  • Meri Pandevska, Circulation Clerk, Aurora Public Library, Eola Road Branch ($750 scholarship.)

An enthusiastic worker and student, Meri Pandevska demonstrates her interest in expanding her knowledge of Library Science. Currently enrolled in the Library Technical Assistant program at the College of DuPage, she is interested in expanding her customer service skills and helping library users overcome difficulties. Pandevska has worked in DLS libraries since 2001 and values teamwork and new ideas while striving to "ensure that the libraries are the best informational facilities that the general public can turn to."

The Scholarship Committee will present Williams and Pandevska with scholarships at September's Scholarship Dinner. The featured speaker will be Chicago author Laura Caldwell, author of the Izzy MacNeil mystery series, Red Hot Lies, Red Blooded Murder and Red White & Dead, as well as The Good Liar.

The Committee reminds us that the program will also feature a silent auction and musical entertainment. Sponsorship opportunities are available and donations of gift baskets are encouraged.

Shelving Supervisor

Bachelor's degree in a broad discipline required. Prior management/supervisory experience preferred. Excellent communication, interpersonal skills, strong analytical skills, organizational skills, a collaborative approach, and a positive attitude are critical.

Bloomingdale Public Library Closed July 13

The Bloomingdale Public Library will be closed on Monday, July 13, 2009 for an in-service program. They will re-open for business on Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at 9 a.m.

Roselle Public Library Closing July 13-24

Starting Monday, July 13 through Friday, July 24, 2009, the Roselle Public Library will be closed during the day for HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) renovations.

They may be open Monday through Thursday evenings from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., but those plans are subject to change, depending on temperature, etc. Check with the library at 630/529-1641 before you go.

Libraries Promote Green Initiatives

Ever wonder what steps DLS libraries are taking to go green? Visit the Libraries Going Green section of the DLS Here & Now blog to learn about the green features of the Addison Public Library, the libraries with recycling stations, and information on how one library recycles more than 30 tons of paper each year! You'll also learn how to save printer ink by selectively printing from websites as well as information about the new Ecofont.

Maintenance Assistant I

(Part time) Position available July 9, 2009. The Villa Park Public Library seeks a Maintenance Assistant I.

Hours: 18 hours per week, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday.

Responsible for cleaning and or maintenance of library properties and tending library grounds. Experience in custodial work preferred.

Web Content Assistant

(Part time) The Villa Park Public Library.

Responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining the library’s web and social networking presence. Performs work related to the operation of the library’s automation equipment. Requires excellent knowledge of HTML, CSS, and PHP as well as web content management systems. Knowledge of popular social networking applications also required. Recent A+ certification preferred.

Starting pay: $14 per hour. Position is for 12 hours per week.

Reference Librarian

(Part time) University of St. Francis, Joliet, IL. Up to 20 hours per week. Flexible scheduling.

Position Summary: Provides assistance in technical services, such as maintaining current holdings records in the catalog for periodicals. Provides assistance and instruction to patrons regarding the use of the library’s print and electronic resources. Acts as a liaison for the university and the library with local and distance students and staff, as well as community patrons. Assists in maintaining the functioning of the library through a variety of tasks such as development of materials to assist with organization and dissemination of information.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MLS from an ALA accredited institution or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong public service ethic.
  • Recent experience with cataloging.
  • Recent experience with print and online reference tools.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to be productive working independently and be a self-starter.

Youth Services Assistant

(Part time) The Roselle Public Library seeks an enthusiastic, creative, and flexible person for the position of Youth Services Assistant. This position requires the successful candidate to have great people skills and a dedication to service.

This position is 20 hours per week. The minimum salary is $14.48 per hour.

A bachelor's degree with some library training or experience is preferred. Circulation/Technical Services Department Head

(Full time) Bloomingdale Public Library is seeking motivated candidates interested in leading its combined Circulation/Technical Services Department. The library serves a population of 22,854 with an overall operation budget of $2.6 million. Duties include supervising a staff of 21 (full time equivalents), managing all aspects of programs and services in this department, and staff training.

Minimum Qualifications: Requires expertise typically acquired through completion of a MLS program from an ALA accredited school. Minimum five years related circulation/technical services experience in a comparable business, organization, or library including one year of supervisory experience required. Knowledge of library computer systems and processes including word processing, spreadsheet, and database software. Knowledge of SIRSI ILS desirable. Knowledge of reference techniques and automated information retrieval. Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws that impact library operations. Knowledge of AARC2, MARC, LDDM, and DDC. Communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.

Minimum salary is $46,815 (depending on qualifications), plus benefits.
