Status of LSTA Grant Funding

As you know, the State of Illinois is facing a multi-billion dollar budget deficit. Cuts and shortfalls have become part of every Illinois constitutional officer's Fiscal Year 2010 (FY2010) budget package. The Office of the Secretary of State is no exception.

Secretary White's longstanding commitment to excellent service to the residents of our state remains a top priority. In fact, Secretary White's original FY10 budget request included an increase of approximately $1 million to the Illinois State Library. Unfortunately, the General Assembly's budget process resulted in substantive cuts to library programs such as the public library, school library, and library system per capita grants.

In order to minimize the impact of these cuts to long-standing library programs such as delivery and resource sharing, the Illinois State Library will be using the FY2010 Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant funds from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to provide some relief to libraries. Therefore, for this fiscal year, LSTA grants will not be awarded. Instead, funds from IMLS will be used to lessen the effect of the cuts.
